George Hotz is a programmer. He has a blog that inspired this one because I liked its simplicity and its premise:

A home for poorly researched ideas that I find myself repeating a lot anyway

He had a couple of recent posts that I liked quite a bit

  1. The Last Gasps of the Rent Seeking Class

  2. Every minute you aren’t running 69 agents, you are falling behind

In the first, George has a line:

It’s possible that superhuman intelligence will have some mega-compounding return and this calculus will change, but superhuman intelligence will likely just not be understandable to people, so as long as civilization is people, human intelligence is enough.

I find myself agreeing that the first principle of civilization is people, and it will be for the foreseeable future. And people is where we need to focus.

In the second article, there is this bit:

Social media has been extremely toxic for the last couple months. It’s targeting you with fear and anxiety….This post will get way less traction than the doom ones, but it’s telling you the way out.

This call out has been my experience on social media as well. And rather than sit in a toxic environment, I checked out. I’m sure I’ll be back, but being faced with constant fear and anxiety is no way to live. I started this blog because I want other people to know that too.

I want there to be a place on the internet (as tiny as it may be) that has an answer to the doom. It has a real person behind it. Someone who wants you, and everyone else for that matter, to be happy and feel like their life has purpose. If that’s you, get off social media. Start small; take Sundays off. Give it up for Lent. Break away and use the time you’ve gotten back to improve yourself. Learn something by doing something. Stop numbing yourself with uppers, downers, drugs, prescriptions, alcohol, nicotine, pain killers, SSRIs, media consumption…feel something instead. Bring your life into balance, that’s why you’re here.
